If you seriously would like to have a UN career and you would like to stay ON job (don't forget many UN job contracts are fixed-term with no extension guarantee), I would say, you should never stop applying even after you get on board.

Just for your reference, a friend of mine, a UN P staff, sends an average of 30 applications per month for years. He's in several P rosters, and he's never off the job.

This is a long term effort, not just for 1 year or 2.
That's some great advice. It took me well over 300 applications in 3 years just to get one position myself. An advice from a friend who's P3 is that I should already start applying to other places in my 2nd year (of my 2-year contract).

if this is how it's for the ones already working in UN, then the outsider may have to double the effort... its crazy insane

That's really an intriguing case! If you don't mind could you (in general terms) share where your friend works? What he does?

The reason I'm asking is, that this is an experience I have never heard off in all my years with the UN. Of course many organisations don't have a promotion policy, that means that you will need to re-apply when you want to progress your career. But 30 applications a month? I have never heard of that...

Most people I know are in three buckets of people: the first is hopping from short-term to short-term gig (think project experts, young university grads etc), the next group stays in their jobs between 3-5 years (these colleagues typically have a very steep and fast career but this implies a lot of mobility) the last group stays in their jobs pretty much "forever" - both at the G-Level side of things but also all the way up to Directors.

Yes, it is a lot to take in. I'm wondering if we should find a few UN personnel to do a bit of a knowledge sharing session? What does everybody think?

My Inspira stats:
total 52 applications from 2015 to current date
12 under consideration (oldest one 8/2016)
1 offer completed, TA
10 filled from roster
9 cancelled
20 recruitment completed
Levels mostly P2 - P4

My stats:
137 applications since February, from P3 to D1 (mostly P4-P5).
57 I still consider active
80 I consider inactive (either 3 months passed and no answer, or negative answer)
4 short-listings (P3, P4, P4, D1). At 2 of them I did the final interview, but wasn´t selected. The other 2 are interview pending.

Navigating I found that UN personnel has access to training on preparing themselves for interviews. Externals like me, don´t have access to such training.

I often get the impression that the UN is designed for entering young and climb up the ladder; not for externals.

Impressive! Thanks for sharing!

On the interview training- don’t overestimate the insider knowledge: aside from downsizing situations I’m not really aware of much career counseling...

To learn more about UN interviews, I would urge everyone to watch this short YouTube video here (btw. Michael is really well known in the UN for his work in HR - not just in UNFPA but in general)

I have only done the first application but I noticed the part which asks for relations in the UN .my young brother works for UN secretariat which I disclosed.do I stand a chance of getting employed or I should just give up since I have a relation working for IN.
