To be honest, I have never come across an organisation that treats applicants so appallingly as the UN. Sometimes, it seems that they forget the people behind those applications are also humans. The list of grievances is way too long but mostly concerns taking several months to even more than a year (if you read this forum, you will find horror stories of all kinds) to process an application to the next stage. If during this time, after a long wait of say 3 -4 months without any communication, you politely follow-up by E-Mail, no one bothers to respond. I was actually surprised Sebastian asked Nevken to send E-mail and he should expect a reply. Maybe he has been too much in the system to know how things are from the outside or maybe he thinks all UN employees are as nice as him ;-)

In reality, in my experience, receiving a reply will trigger a major shock from me. Most of the time, you never ever receive an E-Mail. I am not talking here about someone bombarding the HR team with dozens of E-Mails daily, rather about someone who politely after, say, several months without a reply sends a quick follow-up E-Mail and then only follows up once a month max.

Even if you find the HR people on LinkedIn and send them an invitation (somehow, they seem to almost always accept the invitations you send them on LinkedIn), then the moment you write to them a message on LinkedIn, they never respond. Of course, you can see on LinkedIn that they read the message. Sometimes, I even wonder if there is some sort of legal contract that they sign that bans them from communicating with applicants.

I know they can afford to do all this to applicants given how competitive the process is but it is not an easy experience to be on the receiving end of it

This also happened to me. I received an email which is below and help me understand what this means.
"Thank you for your recent application for the position of Specialist with UNOPS.

We are writing to inform you that the vacancy deadline has been extended to 31/04/2019 midnight Copenhagen time (CET).

Please note that you do not have to re-apply.

With kind regards,

UNOPS Human Resources

They did not even explain why they are extending the vacancy deadline. This is sad

Hi NevKen!

hope all is well otherwise? I'm happy to try to provide some additional background here - but keep in mind that even though I do know UNOPS quite well, I obviously can't speak for the organisation in this forum... Alright, with this out of the way:

I do think your observation about extension is valid - it is something that has gone up. Part of the reason is that UNOPS really wants to make sure the right mix of skills & expertise is in the pool of applicants before a long-list / short-list is created. The point being that encouragement / special outreach to diversify the pool of applicants is very important to get many people to apply. Once the actual screening process starts the process gets pretty mechanistic/rigorous (at least that's my experience). What I would do in case you find another example where you have questions about the process is to write to jobs [at] - that mailbox is monitored and typically you will receive a reply.

But let's keep this discussion going here - in fact, if you happen to see a job where this happens - if you applied or not - feel free to post the link here and we can see what's going on...
Hi Sebastian,

I noted a similar situation with a VA for a Sudan position where the deadline has been extended twice.
The link's here: ... x?id=20963

Wondered what might be going on. Could you share your insights in general?
