Language rules for the UN

Post by starryhindsight » 13 Sep 2020, 13:14

Does anyone know the rules for languages to be eligible for international posts? From what I hear P1-P3 postings are quite lenient on the rule but you need to know a second UN language to be eligible for P4 onwards...

I do not think it is necessary as a P4 to speak a second language. Depends on the posts. But of course language capacities open many more doors that you would not have seen. Besides, do you want to work in a country without speaking their official language? How are you going to even buy in agreement from their Government and people without speaking their language? How are you going to engage with your national staff members who can be significant assets to your team? I speak as a person who used to speak only English.
