Newbie

Hi
I am a Communications Specialist and Journalist with specialist skills as a spokesperson, creating appropriate content, advising on communications strategy and training key personnel to engage with the Media.
Am new to the UN system. Visited the UN in Geneva in 2016 as part of a course in Leadership and International diplomacy. Keen to use skills in East or West Africa , the Caribbean and South America
English is my mother tongue and am proficient in French with intermediate Spanish.
Have sent in one application and plan to tweak the cover letter for other jobs. What can I expect after the auto acknowledgement of my application? Is there a time line..6 months? Any other places you suggest? Keen to avoid Europe and North America.
Have a dependent elderly mother for whom I am responsible. Might this be an issue with any placement? She is healthy and mobile.
Appreciate your thoughts.

That's mean you know at least something about the UN, how was your experience at the UN while you were attending the course work.

It's the most complicated part at the UN System organizations. Do not expect, browse the vacancies that best fits your experiences and expertise and keep applying. Again, not to raise your expectations but to increase your chances. The more the expectations the more you will go down.

Of course key duty stations (Europe of America) are exceptionally high in demand with extraordinary competition etc etc, but do not be offended of tough competition - there are many different organizations that offers many assignments. Specially while your background is at communications - the key organizations that deals at Info Management and Comms are based in high profile duty stations (do not miss applying there)

Only at non-dependent duty stations. This shouldn't be a problem as your specialisation doesn't necessarily requires to be posted in such regions, although you mention in PHP about your dependents, you still can make a case or in extreme circumstances you can take you dependent unofficially... if that is a must.
